"T.H.O.T" - 2021 (Narrative)
Written by: Jayson Johnson, Sara Anders
Story By: Kareem Gedra Logline: A confident ladies man reconsiders going on a date after hearing gossip at the local barbershop. Director's Statement: As a director, I was drawn to this project because it allowed to tackle serious societal issues around misogyny, slut-shaming and sexual double standards through the lens of an entertaining, comedic story. Too often, these toxic attitudes and behaviors towards women get brushed aside or played for cheap laughs in mainstream comedies. With "T.H.O.T.," I wanted to create a fun, relatable film that still packs a cultural punch. On a personal level, I've witnessed firsthand how cringeworthy locker room banter and the spread of malicious gossip among male friend groups can objectively ruin relationships and damage women. The barbershop setting was the perfect insular backdrop to honestly depict how this kind of unchecked sexist behavior proliferates when there is a lack of accountability. At the same time, I aimed to subvert traditional gender dynamics by flipping the script - making the female lead the empowered, confident character who knows what she wants, while the male lead crumbles under his own fragile ego and outdated expectations of women. She perseveres despite her past, allowing her to organically arrive at a happy ending she designs for herself. Ultimately, through humorous situations and recognizable characters, I wanted "T.H.O.T." to serve as a mirror for society. By watching these arcs play out, I hope audiences can self-reflect on their own preconceptions and unconscious biases. If even a few viewers have their eyes opened to these persistent misogynistic attitudes, and seek to change their own behavior as a result, then I've accomplished my goal with this film. Laughter can be a powerful vehicle for self-realization and positive cultural growth. |
